Internal and external data Essay

The Bowmer and Kirkland human reasources department will collect and use external labour market information for planning in the business. Unemployment statistics : The current labour market figures show that in the east midlands current unemployment is only 4.1%, this means Bowmer and Kirkland may have difficulty finding people to employ as so many already have a job. As the higher the unemployment rate the more people there will be for Bowmer and Kirkland to employ. The unemployment rate of the east midlands is 1% lower than that of the whole UK. In Derbyshire alone the unemployment rates are paticually low and numbers are still falling. Although rates are low, GDP per head still lags behind the UK and European averages, skill levels and productivity in manufacturing are also below average. 31.6% of people working in east midlands have no qualifications compared with 28.9% of England, so when Bowmer and Kirkland need to emply someone it will alot of the time also include the costs of training them up. So in conclusion the unemployment rates in the east midlands could cause a problem when it comes to Bowmer and Kirkland recruiting staff. For a start there are only 4.1% people avaliable to work, and they have got appreciate that not all that 4.1% will have the knowlage and skills recuired to work at Bowmer and Kirkland. This will result in costing Bowmer and Kirkland alot of time and money, mainly on training. One way of getting round the low unemployment rates would be to take staff they already have and train them up for hiarachy positions. Although this will leave another problem of having to find someone to fill their origional position, so they cant win really. Employment and Unemployment in the construction industry : In the last few years turnover has gone up and the ammount of people employed has remained static. The avaliability of contructors in the labour market is a problem to Bowmer and Kirkland as there are not alot of qualified workers out there so most of there employees have the standard ammount of GCSE’s and A-levels. However Bowmer and Kirkland can train people up. The business’ in the local area that Bowmer and Kirkland are compeating for for the same employees are, Thorntons, Denby pottery, Rolls royce, these are the major compaines in this area, but construction companies down to Birmingham also cause competition for workers. Internal information The Bowmer and Kirkland human reasources team will also collect and use Internal staffing information for planning in the business. Labour turnover : Bowmer and Kirkland measure Labour turnover because they believe it is important to know how many people they need in the business. This also allows them to be able to compare their figures to other industrys and see how they match up. From the figures they have 20% of people have left the company this year, the main few reasons people are leaving are to branch out and move on, some are only probation periods and dont have their contract renuied, and some could have been sacked or made redundant. Although saying that some of them sometimes come back to the company depending on why they left. If someone is wanting to leave they have to hand in a 4 week or week notice and have the exit interview. Bowmer and Kirkland do this so they can see if there is a trend in why people are leaving, then they may be able to do something about it. For example †¦ most of the leavers may be from one department, and it may narrow down to the fact they are all finding better paid jobs elsewhere, so then Bowmer and Kirkland can sort out that problem. Bowmer and Kirkland however see this as a good thing as this means they can bring in new people/staff and they will bring in new ideas to the company. Bowmer and Kirkland on average employ 20 – 25 new starters each month, the majority of them have minimum qualifications and 10% are usually apprentices, however Bowmer and Kirkland will train them up. Sickness and Accident rates : Bowmer and Kirkland dont compare their Sickness and Accident rates against the national average. However they compare it internally within the company. They have weekly reports to monitor staff absences and the health and safety department monitor all their staff accidents. Of course if someone is found to be having an unusual ammount of absences they will have to have words with them and see the reason behind this as it would not be good for the company. Age, Skills and Training : Bowmer and Kirkland look at their demographic trends. Within the company 92 % of their employees are male and only 8 % female, this is purly because of the concept of he industry, it is more appealing to the male population. Also new training scemes are being used more in Bowmer and Kirkland now so the older generation is being left behind slightly, for example†¦ Modern apprentaships.

Epistemology and Metaphysics Schools Paper Essay

The nature of skepticism in real-life today, on a daily basis goes mostly unnoticed. People react to environments of skepticism differently and could become biased upon the subject discussed. According to Encyclopedia Britannica (2011), â€Å"skepticism is defined as 1: an attitude of doubt or a disposition to incredulity either in general or toward a particular object 2 a: the doctrine that true knowledge or knowledge in a particular area is uncertain b: the method of suspended judgment, systematic doubt, or criticism characteristic of skeptics† (Dictionary, para. 1). People are inclined to accept ideas in society today without questioning what is actually being presented. It is very important to question or think critically when confronted with authority because the issue at hand may not always be right. Imagine if Philosophers, such as Copernicus did not hypothesize that the earth is not the center of the universe. We would still be living with various points of views on the subject. People should not accept ideas of others without questioning the ideas first. Unfortunately, we do this everyday unconsciously. At work our supervisors make requests to perform certain tasks, which most of the time we do not question the outcome. We take for granted that our supervisor knows what he or she is doing because of the authoritative figure that he or she plays. Skepticism could have quite an impact on the way employees perform his or her job. In the work environment employees usually take for granted that the boss knows best, and depending on the situation might not question the reason for his or her position on the process. For instance, when a supervisor implements a new job and informs his or her employees on the due date without asking for input, it is with reasonable doubt that one would be skeptical. The employees could have questioned the boss’s process such as whether he or she maintained good judgment on the direction that he or she takes on-the-job. Questions could also be raised in regard to the types of consequences employees will have if the job is not performed well. Employees could be skeptical of the job and ask if it is in the best interest of the company, especially if the supervisor did not have input from the employees prior to the start of the job. Employees typically become skeptical and doubt the authority figures of most bosses. Skepticism also plays a role in our schooling. We usually take the teachers role and the information presented to us to be correct even though the information could be incorrect. Our society has come to trust what others have told us to believe in and our minds have been trained to believe the information to be correct. Everyone should be valued for his or her own opinion and healthy skepticism in real-life environments. References Encyclopedia Britannica. (2011). Encyclopedia-Britannica Online Encyclopedia. Hitch Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Hitch - Essay Example During the time when Hitchens tries to help out Albert he also falls for Sara who was a gossip columnist. Thus the movie moves forwards with the interplay of the four characters in different situations. (Tenant, 2005). As the movie moves forward it is able to capture the attention of the audience because it is a movie to which most of the audience is able to relate easily. The goal of the paper is to explore how closely sociological issues are related to the movie Hitch. The main issues which have been addressed through the movie are primarily social interaction, race and gender. This is because we see in the movie Sara the gossip columnist had a strong dislike for men and she believed that men are worthless. From the feminist perspective it can be said that Sara wanted to protest against all men of the society by showing complete disregard and disgust for them. Moreover we also see in the movie that she thinks Alex Hitchens as a man who teaches other men to use women according to their fancy. This is because one of the clients of Alex had a one night stand with Sara’s best friend. Taking cue from this we can say that the movie Hitch also tries to focus on the objectification of women from the perspective of Sara. Through Sara the message which we get is that objectification of women by men was a very common phenomenon and women were aware of such a system existing and here in the movie Sara’s desire to unmask Hitchens is basically a p rotest which women want to undertake against men. Therefore Sara is determined to unmask Alex in front of the world. Devereux in the book, â€Å"Media Studies: Key Issues and Debates† says that the casting of the movie â€Å"Hitch† has remained an example of the inadequate representation of the minority groups like the Blacks in the mass media. Alex played by William Smith is an example of African representation in the media and the presence of stars like him point to the fact that though Blacks have received

SUMMARY WORKSHOP-RESEARCH METHOD CLASS Coursework

SUMMARY WORKSHOP-RESEARCH METHOD CLASS - Coursework Example Bryman defines quantitative data analysis as the process through which a researcher transforms all the data observed or collected into numerical data. The method of analysis often answers questions, describes events, or a situation that the â€Å"how† and â€Å"what† questions apply. The method deals with measuring or attributes that are related to quantities (Bryman 2008). Quantitative data analysis is applied to find evidence used to prove wrong or support a hypothesis or idea. The research method operates using three types of quantitative measures including nominal, ordinal, and interval. These measures provide certain advantages that are associated with their use during the analysis of data. Quantitative analysis utilizes statistical package for the social sciences (SPSS) to ensure accuracy of the results derived from the analysis. The data tool resembles a spreadsheet, but it has a different modus operandi. The statistical tool is preferred for analyzing data generated from social sciences research studies because it is tailor made for this task. Bryman looks at a comparison of quantitative and qualitative data analysis methods with the view of their potential when they are integrated. The two levels of research approach research from different scopes of discourse and analysis. Though there are disagreements over the possibility of combining the two methods, a number of research approaches have employed a structure that closely resembles the quantitative/qualitative research approach (Bryman 2008). The two types of research are fundamentally different and they have been described as explained; while quantitative analysis is considered rationalistic and positive qualitative analysis is considered naturalistic and constructivist. Because of these fundamental differences, the two analysis techniques are applicable in different stages of a research study (Sarantakos 2005). In conclusion, quantitative and qualitative

Chinas Economic Condition Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Chinas Economic Condition - Essay Example Factors that contribute to this are the political system in China as well as the economic system. Market efficiency is achieved when a society is able to put all of its resources to use in order to reach a full level of production. The resources that a society has to employ are labor, land, entrepreneurial ability, and capital (Campbell & Brue, 2004: 24). It has also been noted that market efficiency cannot be obtained unless there is a healthy level of competition present (Clark, 2007:989). China's, known as the People's Republic of China, is lead by the Chinese Communist Party. In a communist system, the government owns most property, resources, and businesses. They make major decisions as to what and how much will be produced. In this type of system, leaders are not elected; they are appointed by the CCP and have emerged from within the ranks of the party (Eui.com, 2008). In this type of system there is belief that all resources should be allocated equally amongst the citizens, however this is most often times is not the case. In 1978 China initiated free market reforms, which was a major change in its economic system (Eui.com, 2008).

Development and application of a diatom-inferred pH model Research Paper

Development and application of a diatom-inferred pH model - Research Paper Example The RMSE gives a measure of the ‘apparent’ error in the model and thus over-optimistic while the RMSE calculated using bootstrap is a more reliable indicator of the true predictive ability of a transfer function. Analysis of the dataset with both simple weighted averaging (WA) and weighted averaging with tolerance down-weighting (WA(tol)) resulted in the selection of WA for pH reconstructions as it gave lower estimates of the RMSEP (Table 2). After having decided on criteria that maximize the performance of the model, I have applied it to a lake sediment core, Llyn Hir to perform a pH reconstruction. In WA reconstructions, averages are taken twice, once in WA regression and once in WA calibration. The resulting shrinkage of the inferred environmental variable is corrected for using inverse or classical deshrinking regression (Birks et al., 1990). Following analyses using both methods, trends in residuals revealed that inverse deshrinking was more prone to be biased than classical deshrinking technique (Table 3). The resulting WA classical deshrinked transfer function was applied to fossil diatom assemblages enumerated from the Llyn Hir sediment core. WA regression and calibration (both with and without tolerance down-weighting) were performed using C2 Programme. The WA model shows a strong predicted relationship between observed pH and diatom-inferred pH values (r2 = 0.83) (Figure 2). Statistical results for both simple and tolerance down-weighted WA show that the predictive ability of the WA and WA(tol) models, in terms of the predicted r2 and the RMSEP, are comparable (Table 2). Simple WA was chosen as it gives slightly higher predicted correlation between measured and diatom-inferred pH and lower predicted estimates of the error in this model. A total of 124 diatom taxa were observed throughout the Llyn Hir core, 8 of which did not occur in the training dataset. This means that over 90% of the diatoms occurred in training set which makes our

The European Monetary Union the Challenges It Faces Essay

The European Monetary Union the Challenges It Faces - Essay Example According to the report ceo-functionalism as well as inter-governmentalism are both macro-level theories of international relations, which are especially developed with a view to illustrate, elucidate and envisage the European integration as a process.Such macro-economic frameworks help in better understanding of certain ‘history making’ decisions. As the paper declares the attribute which can be most strongly associated with the neofunctionalist approach with regard to the study of European integration and which symbolized the most noteworthy advance upon Mitrany’s perspective is the process of spill over. This process can be divided into two major parts – sectoral or functional spill-over which is associated with the growth of assimilative activities spanning from one sector to another. For instance, the expansion of policies related to coal and steel to agriculture and transport. The other attribute of the political spill-over entails politicization of sectoral activities whereby the harmonization of monetary policies is substituted by a more centralized system of governance. The entire process of spillover is aptly described in the Merger Treaty which was signed in 1965 and which was primarily aimed at merging of the three treaties of Rome namely the ECSC, the EURATOM (European Atomic Community) and the EEC (E uropean Economic Community). The treaty aimed for a single commission and a single council of the three European communities.

Do you consider that there still is an identifiable British working Essay

Do you consider that there still is an identifiable British working class fiction - Essay Example An identifiable British working class fiction is still identifiable but society has changed perceptively since the World War One which considerably altered definitions and perceptions of this status. Through the texts Lucky Jim (1954) by Kinsley Amis, The Girls of Slender Means (1963) by Muriel Spark, Money (1984) by Martin Amis and Regeneration (1991) by Pat Barker, I will illustrate the differences in perception and characteristics authors use to clarify definitions through their main protagonists, as well as show other examples of working class fiction. First, it is imperative to present a universally accepted definition of what a working class is and what makes it identifiable. The idea of class structure is comprised of a triangular shape2, the lower base of this model represents the working class these are people who carry out minor jobs (labourers, mine workers, farmers) and are not professionally academic. E.P. Thompson stated that the British working class was excluded from the privileges of education, "fundamental rights3" and a better lifestyle. Many of these human rights are distinguished clearly through the novels: several of these attainments that the individuals lacked can be seen as a "mass political movement" progressing to a positive view of working class. Lucky Jim (1954) began this movement after Kingsley Amis, part of the 'Angry Young Men4' group of writers, wrote this classic. In the 1950s, the chance of a university education had given more people, more working and middle class young people the opportunity to avail of higher education. But Jim is neither intellectual nor very ambitious to progress in his chosen field, yet he seeks acceptance by the 'establishment5' (higher class people). Although humorous, the book shows how he really wants that acceptance and the money, status and power that go with it. He knows, cynically, that a boy from a grammar school has little chance; his working class background stands in the way of his progress. Amis is witty, but a cynical realist, with satire and black comedy. His dialogue is excellent for bringing characters and places to life, as is his descriptive power. In the novel The Girls of Slender Means (1963) Spark seems to portray people trying to tolerate 'genteel poverty6' by making light of it all. But it is a vivid picture of civilian suffering as a result of World War Two. The May of Teck club seems to be a place where they try to maintain a facade, but it reflects that every class is suffering, with little material wealth or comfort. It highlights the status of women as workers in their own right and the changes in their status brought about by war.Furthermore Martin Amis's novel Money (1984) deals with the concept of British working class in a modern-day perspective. He employs the concept here that money is dirty, but the world is driven to acquire it because of the power and status it brings. The preface of the book (subtitled A Suicide Note) should be read first as a warning to all. Everything about money and business is linked to a loss of a working ethic. His uncle, who worked very hard, is an example of a working class person who no matter how he tried, failed. Self is admonishing us on how random the acquisition of wealth is, and how addictive and corrup tive it is. Amis uses postmodernist techniques as the author puts himself into the narrative at times. He wants to give shape to the

Buddhism in 1500-1700 AD Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Buddhism in 1500-1700 AD - Essay Example (The meeting of Altan Khaan and Sonam Gyasto in 1578 spread Buddhism in all parts of greater Mongolia) The Toyotomi family was a group of people who were profoundly devoted towards the Buddhism religion. Therefore, they intended to build a large statue of Buddha in the Hokoji temple in Japan. This was to pay honor to Buddha and help in spreading the religion by fascinating the people through the marvelous statue of Buddha. The statue was being built and when it got completed, unfortunately I destroyed. It could not remain for a very long time as it destroyed due to a devastating earthquake. In 1598 it started to re-build again but, because of the catching of fire, it was again destroyed. The statue was made up of Bronze and was almost completed. (Lipikazuo) One group of the Buddhist religious group was the Oirat Mongols. Oirat Mongols were a group of people who originated from the Altai region of the Western Mongolia. The Oirats, therefore, were the tribes from the western part of Mongolia and were influenced highly by Buddhism. In 1615, the oirat Mongols converted to Geluk school of Tibetan Buddhism. The fifth Dalai Lama defeated the rivals Kagyu, Jonang sects and the secular ruler who was the prince of Shang. He easily defeated them due to the help and aid of Gushi Khan. Gushi Khan was the military leader of the Oriat Mongols. He then converted to the Geluk school of Tibetan Buddhism. Anonymous. (2009). Different Degree Levels in Nursing Essay Example for Free

Different Degree Levels in Nursing Essay Nursing is a wonderful, rewarding profession to enter, and it must be chosen for all the right reasons. Today many nurses are faced with a difficult decision to return to college. For those of us who wish to continue to advance our nursing career; we continue to need the educational assistance that is necessary to advance our nursing skills. With nursing there are so many paths one can obtain after achieving your RN. You just need to choose what path is right for you. Basically there are two of the most common degrees to choose from the Associate’s Degree of Nursing (ADN) or Bachelors Degree of Nursing (BSN). Many do not realize the difference between the two. However there are many differences, but both nurses subscribe to the same nursing philosophies. With that being said, the ADN is about a two-year program while the BSN is a four year college or university. Another differences between ADN and BSN, is the ADN is 72 credits and the BSN is 125 credits. Today many nurses are faced with a tough and difficult decision. They are asking themselves what is the right choice for me? Why should I return to school? What are the benefits going to be for me after completing my degree? Truly, when it comes down to it only the nurse can decide and make the necessary decision. The associate degree level of nursing was developed out of a need to produce nurses in response to a shortage during and following World War II (http://nursing. adelphi. edu/about/history. php,n. dHYPERLINK http://nursing. adelphi. edu/about/history. php,n. d. . ). In return many students who choose nursing were leaving only after a few years, thus creating a shortage. The ADN of nursing typically focuses on clinical competencies, fundamentals and technical skill needed to care for the patients. Also, the ADN degree promotes more task-oriented nurses, basic theory and the judgment to function at the entry level. They must also demonstrate the skills necessary in life-saving practice. It generally takes about two years at a community college and the cost for this degree is more manageable. Once the nurse proves their competencies by passing the NCLEX-RN they can obtain a state license. The benefit of having ADN is that the degree itself is a much shorter timeframe and a much less expensive to complete to become a registered nurse. â€Å"In 1965, the American Nurses Association (ANA) designated the baccalaureate degree as the educational entry point into professional nursing practice† (Friberg, page 3). The Bachelor of Science (BSN) in nursing typically takes a person four years to complete at a state college or university. The expense of a four-year degree is costly for some who are trying to be sparing with their college education. The BSN requires the ability to think logically and critically in patient care settings. The curriculum places emphasis on leadership and management in the nursing setting. Also it broadens the knowledge of patho-physiology of diseases, deals more with public issues and refines to a deeper assessment of nursing skills. One of the many benefits of having a BSN allows one to gain more experience and more responsibility. Also, allowing one to further their education in nursing by obtaining a master’s degree, nurse anesthetist, and nurse practitioner. The BSN also allows for a salary increase. It is unreasonable to think that this situation is going away anytime soon. With that being said, looking into the future today most hospitals are trying to achieve Magnet status. â€Å" The nation’s Magnet hospitals, which are recognized for nursing excellence and superior patient outcomes, have moved to require all nurse managers and nurse leaders to hold a baccalaureate or graduate degree in nursing by 2013†(Rossester 2012b). One thought to this is to have nurses obtain the most knowledge possible, and the know how to think in critical situations when they arise. One of my patient care situations that I can recall is when I was working on the telemetry floor in our local hospital. I was with a few other nurses, having their associate degree and two with their bachelor degree. Let’s call the ADN nurse A and the BSN nurse B. So, we were all around the nurse’s station waiting to give report to the next shift and one of the nursing assistants came running down the hall saying, one of the patients in room say 420 is not responding when I try to call her name. Nurse A and Nurse B both went into the room and the patient had no pulse and wasn’t breathing. Nurse B immediately started CPR and took charge in calling a Code. The code team arrived at this time. Nurse B asked if Nurse A could take the patient’s blood sugar and hang some fluids and get the patient on the monitor. Nurse A was also well in keeping the family and the people in the hallway calm and relaxed. The patient in the end was transferred to the ICU where they can better care for the patient in this critical situation and the physician was notified. Nurse B was more knowledgeable and had the necessary leadership skills along with the advanced critical thinking skills that this situation required. Nurse A was competent and did what was expected of the skills she had. In conclusion, I believe that having your ADN degrees is a quick way to gain the necessary knowledge and skills to enter into practice and the cost is less. The BSN allows one to prepare for management and leadership decisions. Also allowing for more critical skills and providing better career opportunities along with higher pay. As I reflect back on my education and skills and the future I recommend all nurses should receive their BSN. References http://nursing. adelphi. edu/about/history. php. Reflective Essay Essay Reflective Essay Receiving the horrible news was more painful than walking on a thousand nails. The many times I told myself that it was all just a dream, the more I began to believe myself. All until the horrible realization that it was happening and that it was too good to be true. Realizing that every morning I woke up to go check his room he wouldn’t be there was one of the many realizations I had to experience. But there was one positive outcome of the death of my brother. It taught me that you can never take the time you spend with your loved ones for granted even if you only see or converse with them for five minutes, never take it for granted. I remember this tragic event like it was yesterday. My brother and I were 8 years apart. So we were very close. He left off going to Pennsylvania to go to Penn State College. We talked and texted at least 3 times a day if not more. Our conversations were very meaningful and I will always cherish the ones that we had. During Christmas of ’09 he came down for the home going of my aunt. Just being able to see him was enough for me. While talking to him my mother and I noticed that he had a lump on the left side of his neck and my mother advised him to get it checked out. So, he went to the doctor and they ran tests and found out that it was a cancerous tumor and that they would need to start treatment right away. Finding this out, my brother then moved back to Florida to start his treatments at ORMC (Orlando Regional Medical Center). After about 3 months of treatment, the doctor said that the cancer was more aggressive than they thought it could develop so they said there was nothing else that they could do. The medical staff proceeded to send Earl to hospice where he would no longer be taking chemotherapy but just medicine to relieve him of the pain. We all knew he wouldn’t be with us that much longer, but the persistence and determination in me believed that he would live to see me reach high school, get my license, and go to prom. Over time he stopped eating and had to be fed by tube. When he stopped eating, I realized that sooner or later my dreams of him seeing my accomplishments the things older siblings see their younger siblings do were over. He began to get weaker and weaker and he stopped talking to anyone. I remember the last time I saw him. We were lying down in his bed together and we were singing his favorite song. As it was time for me to go he said â€Å"I love you Boo† and those were the last words I ever got to hear him say to me. The next night, we all got that dreading phone call that he had left us here on earth to be with the heavenly father. The news was just heartbreaking and I couldn’t bear to hear it. This experience was very painful but it also allowed for me to gain some positivness in my thinking. Many teenagers today live life being ungrateful and snobby. Walking around thinking like that isn’t always the best because as the quote says you never realize what you had until it’s gone. Nowadays it takes a tragedy for modern day teenagers to learn and show gratitude towards parents and family members. The death of my brother awakened me to live life to the fullest and don’t go a day not doing anything because you never know when your time may be. It also taught me to never go a day without telling my other siblings and my parents I love you. Just saying those simple three words could mean a lot to anyone. Another thing it taught me was to always be happy and greet others with a smile and hug(depending on how well you know the person), even some strangers are welcome to hug if they are having a bad day. Just doing the simplest things could impact someone else’s life and you would never know. So if there is anything I could leave you with, never take life for granted, live life to its fullest and enjoy yourself. Make your life worthwhile and enjoy it.

Psychological factors affecting health

Psychological factors affecting health How does psychology affect ones physical health? Several psychological factors including stress, behavior due to chronic pain, depression, and cultural beliefs can have adverse affects on the bodys physical condition. The treatment of both physiological and psychological aspects of poor health are crucial for patients to have successful treatment outcomes, maintain and improve wellness, and improved adherence to medical regimens. Adding a team of five psychologists to a hospitals staff and assigning specific job titles and duties to each psychologist would be immensely beneficial to the patients. The five job titles include substance abuse counselor, inpatient-only psychologist, child psychologist, adult psychologist, and pain psychologist. Substance abuse counseling is a demanding and rewarding job that requires patience, a desire to help others, and compassion (The Princeton Review, 2008). Often, addicts are unaware of the services that can be provided to them. A substance abuse counselor can refer patients to other services such as family agencies, food pantries, a psychiatrist or physician, and welfare agents. Depending on the needs of the addict and their situation other services may be available as well (The Princeton Review, 2008). The substance abuse counselor will be in charge of coordinating the use of recovery programs and structured programs for substance abuse, in conjunction with a social worker. Substance abuse counselors work with a variety of professionals in order to provide the best service to the each patient. Along with coordinating recovery programs, the substance abuse counselor will collaborate with local schools and provide information to children about substance abuse and how abstain from using substances. He or she will provide information on programs for students who have already started using substances, and for those who have parents that abuse substances. Motivational interviewing is another service that the substance abuse counselor may provide in order to keep the addict on track. With motivational interviewing, the patient becomes aware of potential problems caused, consequences experienced, and risks factors of their behavior. The counselor will help the patient envision a brighter f uture, while keeping him or her motivated to achieve set goals (Axia College of University of Phoenix, 2008). Because substance abuse counselors can have as little as a high school diploma for their education, strict job limitations must be set. The counselor may not prescribe medicine, diagnose the patient, or provide psychological therapy. Instead, he or she may refer the patient to a specialist who can further help the patient with medical needs. A substance abuse counselor will be very helpful to reduce hospital stays and increase adherence to medical regimens. Substance abuse counseling can be done on an outpatient basis and may help the patient to avoid a relapse which occurs most during the first weeks and months of treatment (Axia College of University of Phoenix, 2008). Through the use of motivational interviewing, the counselor will be able to keep the patient motivated and on track with his or her medical regimens. Substance abuse counselors provide support toward the improvement and maintenance of health by keeping the patient motivated, referring him or her to other needed services, and helping him or her cope with their addiction. Inpatient-Only Psychologist Providing inpatient therapies and services to the patients who are admitted to the hospital is a necessity. An inpatient-only therapist will utilize various methods to facilitate adjustment and coping skills with patients suffering a chronic or terminal illness. A majority of the patients who are admitted to the hospital are there because they are seriously ill. The inpatient-only therapist will provide services such as teaching coping skills to help patients adjust to their illness, individual and family therapy sessions, and refer the patient to support groups if desired. Although an inpatient-only psychologist may make decisions such as prescribing medicine, he or she can diagnose a psychological illness and decide an appropriate treatment plan. If he or she feels the patient needs medication, the inpatient-only psychologist may refer the patient to a psychiatrist for further evaluation. An inpatient-only psychologist will decrease hospitalization time because he or she will aid in the coping and adjustment to a chronic or terminal illness. Once the patient has successfully adjusted to his or her illness, depending on the severity of the disease, he or she may be able to return home and continue regular activities. Having an inpatient psychologist will also improve the patients adherence to medical regimens. According to Axia College of University of Phoenix (2008), using behavioral methods such as tailoring the regimen to make it as compatible with the patients habits and rewarding him or her for following the given regimen, can help to improve compliance. The role of the inpatient-only psychologist will support the improvement and maintenance of patient wellness by helping the chronically and terminally ill patients adjust to their illness and maintain their usual lifestyle in a way that keeps them complying with medical regimens. Child Psychologist Children react to and cope with illness very differently from adults. As a part of the team of psychologists working for the hospital, the child psychologist will collaborate with local schools to help children with medical conditions cope with being ill. In the hospital, he or she will provide psychological preparation methods for children prior to medical procedures. According to Axia College of University of Phoenix (2008), over 2.5 million patients admitted to short-stay hospitals are under the age of 15. How much a child understands about being hospitalized and his or her illness depends on his or her age. The child psychologist will be responsible for providing informational techniques such as pamphlets, movies, puppet shows, and tours to help the child settle down and cope with the facility and his or her procedures. The psychologist may also work with parents to develop techniques to prepare the child for procedures and for adjusting to every day life when the child returns h ome. For most hospitalized children who have a positive outcome, their stress level appears to be temporary and does not seem to produce long-term emotional problems (Axia College of University of Phoenix, 2008). Therefore, by having a child psychologist to improve a childs hospital experience, the child may have shorter hospitalization and can understand his or her illness better in order to adhere to medical regimens. The role of a child psychologist is supportive toward improvement and maintenance of wellness because the specialized training of the psychologists allows him or her to design treatment plans and preparation techniques that will better help the child understand what is wrong and how to treat the problem. Adult Psychologist Adult psychologists are similar to child psychologists except their target group would be people ranging from early adults to senior citizens. Like the child psychologist, the adult psychologist will provide psychological preparation methods to his or her patients before a medical procedure or surgery. He or she will be responsible for diagnosing stress disorders in adults and aiding in stress interventions. Although the adult psychologist will not prescribe medicine he or she can determine patient diagnosis and treatment plans. If medications are needed then the psychologist may refer the patient to other specialists. The Adult psychologist will provide services such as teaching stress relieving techniques which include cognitive therapy, problem-solving training, and stress-inoculation training (Axia College of University of Phoenix, 2008). If necessary, the psychologist may refer patients to a massage therapist to reduce muscle tension caused by stress. Like children, adults with a positive hospitalization outcome are likely to experience reduced stress and anxiety which may cause a faster recovery. When the adult is able to address his or her concerns and get answers from the psychologist, he or she will likely adhere to medical regimens because his or her anxieties toward the regimen have been addressed. Improvement and maintenance of health will be supported by the Adult psychologist by mentally preparing patients for medical procedures, reducing stress and anxiety, and addressing the concerns of the patient. Pain Psychologist Pain can have adverse affects on both the physical and psychological health of a patient. When pain and discomfort derives from tissue damage it is called organic pain. Pain perceived through psychological processes is called psychogenic pain (Axia College of University of Phoenix, 2008). The responsibilities of the pain psychologist include providing treatment for chronic pain, designing and implementing behavioral intervention plans, and teaching the patient and his or her family skills to meet future mental health needs. He or she will provide services such as behavioral and cognitive treatments to reduce pain. Having a pain psychologist on staff will reduce hospitalization time by offering outpatient services and teaching the patients and their family how to alter their everyday lives in order to meet the needs of the patient. By addressing the patients psychosocial factors, such as making the patient state that he or she will comply with the regimen and involving family for soci al support, the patients is more likely to comply with medical regimens (Axia College of University of Phoenix, 2008). Like the other psychologists, the role of the pain psychologist will be supportive toward improvement and maintenance of wellness by improving patient compliance and designing treatment plans that are individualized to the patient. Several hospitals have already implemented a team of psychologists as their staff. One hospital in central Connecticut has a staff with seven different psychologists specializing in many areas of psychology. Hospital physicians have stated that having the team of psychologists on hand to treat patients in need has improved attendance and compliance (APApractice.Org, n.d.). Each of the selected roles is very important for providing quality patient care. By not implementing one of the roles, the psychologist may become overwhelmed with work and the patients will not receive the specialized care that is important to a successful diagnosis and treatment. Although some of the job duties overlap between the psychologists, this may be helpful to reduce the workload of each psychologist and keep a high-level of quality care. Each of the psychologists is specialized in a certain area of psychological treatment, but some of them do perform similar job duties. Having an overlap in job duties ma y be beneficial for second opinions and covering shifts when one psychologist becomes ill or takes a vacation. Many patients with a physical illness can suffer from emotional problems as well. Patients would be better off with the services provided by the psychologists because every aspect of their illness will be addressed and treated. Without psychological services available to the patient, the patient may never address his or her mental needs which can lead to more physical illnesses. According to APApractice.Org (n.d.), patients often present emotional problems that physicians do not know how to handle. Therefore, adding a team of psychologists would be more beneficial to the patients than disregarding the option of psychological services within the hospital. Overall, the implementation of psychological services in a hospital has proven to be beneficial for the hospitals who have already hired a team of psychologists. By adding a team of psychologists consisting of a substance abuse counselor, an inpatient-only psychologist, an adult psychologist, a child psychologist, and a pain psychologist; hospitalized patients will experience shorter hospitalizations, increased quality of care, and will adhere to medical regimens more often. Not only will patients receive quality inpatient care, but they can continue their care on an outpatient basis which will help to keep them on track with their treatments.

The Female on Trial :: Gender Studies Research papers

The Female on Trial The theme of the first semester of my senior year at Bryn Mawr College, although I have lacked any gender coursework in my first three years of semesters, unexpectedly heavily involves the collision of the science, literature, and politics of gender. As my most last minute, haphazard schedule of any semester ever, on the next to last day of the shopping week period, I found myself adding two gender studies classes to my schedule. One entitled Advanced Topics in Developmental Psychology for my Psychology minor, and the other entitled, Interdisciplinary Perspectives of Sex and Gender. Both classes, although very different in their methodology - (one placing a profound importance on precision, cautious and careful experiment design, and the other on "stories" both individual and collective, and their relation to society) - hoped to find the "real" gender problems, look at them with the attention they deserve, and encourage some kind of dialogue for change. Gender Development, as a psychology class, was focused on the role of psychology in reporting only what can be proven, or statistically "significant." It took the stance that science, although slow, has the advantage of facts, which my professor insisted are key for social recognition of a problem which can be sited and lead to broad social change. My other class was in Bryn Mawr and Haverford's shared Feminist and Gender Studies department, although it spent a few classes dedicated to looking at gender from a biological perspective, in general, has looked less at the science, and more at the story or groups of stories that intellectuals tell about their own personal experience, as well as their observations of the larger societal picture concerning gender and sexuality. The class also encouraged intellectual discussions like we were participating in class about these topics and believed the dialogues were key for opening an awareness that might lead to social improvement. I have con tinually struggled with the scientific and intellectual representations of gender development and stigmatization, especially regarding the role of socialization (by "socialization" I mean the stereotypes and stigmas placed on individuals by society based on their sex, sexuality, or gender). How do I define my own experience, do either of these classes tell a better picture for me and my story, or for society, do either provide a better or at least more useful story? My thinking about these questions came to a head when in my final Advanced Topics in Developmental Psychology class, for the first time the professor had not asked the class to read a cluster of psychological studies.

Napoleon Bonaparte Essay -- Papers

Napoleon Bonaparte Napoleon saved France from a horrible situation. He extended the French territory to bring hope to the French people, and brings revolution to Europe. Napoleon Bonaparte never gave up hope for France. Napoleon Bonaparte was born on August 15, 1769. No Bonaparte except for Napoleon became a professional soldier or was good at war. His father Carlo fought for Corsican independence, but after the French took over the island he served. He became prosecutor and judge and entered the French aristocracy. The Directory rewarded him with the appointment as commander of the army of the interior. In March of 1796 Napoleon began operations to divide and defeat the .. ... to navigate rivers that formed boundaries between states. Also the congress reestablished the balance of power among the countries of Europe. Napoleon never really abused his power he remained a fair leader to the people of France all of his life. Napoleon has been referred to as the "first modern dictator," because he didn't abuse his power compared to other leaders in western civilization. Napoleon cared more about the well being of the French people, and didn't care about getting money from the government. Napoleon's achievements and goals should be evaluated in a good way. Because he wasn't a tyrant, he achieved those most of his goals in a civilized way. Napoleon was one of the more fair, and better leaders than the ones that came earlier in historyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦.. But his wife was a whore! (Had to throw that in jokingly)

Destiny, Free Will and Choice - The Power of Fate in Oedipus the King E

The Power of Fate in Oedipus the King The concept of fate has existed since the time of the ancient Greeks. The Greeks believed very strongly in fate, which can be defined as either a power beyond human control that determines events, or the outcome or end. In "Oedipus Rex," King Oedipus lives and dies by fate. Fate influences the entire plot, thereby allowing for some interesting developments that may be unpredictable to the audience. In Sophocles' "Oedipus Rex", fate truly is a huge factor in many scenes and events.   According to ancient Greek belief, the word of God was fate, and fate was the word of God.   Therefore, every event that ever happened was predetermined and unchangeable.   Oedipus himself has been completely victimized by fate.   In the beginning of the play, he was "fated" to kill his father and marry his own mother and conceive children with her.   Since it was the word of Apollo, the god, to the Greeks it meant that it was unchangeable.   Oedipus escaped Corinth, the supposed city of his birth, and ran far away.   He happened upon an old man in the crossroads-a fated event.   Though he did not know it at the time, when he killed the man, it turned out to be his own father-a prophecy he was destined by fate to fulfill (Elsom, 85). "The heralds no sooner reported Laius dead than you appeared and they hailed you king of Thebes."   (Sophocles, 187).   Soon after he unwittingly killed his father, Oedipus happened upon a creature called the Sphinx, who posed a riddle for him.   Though none of the other great minds in the entire world could do this, Oedipus answered her riddle and destroyed her, freeing Thebes.   Thus he subsequently became king of Thebes.   What a fated chain of events! (Elsom, 86). Oedipus was ... ...s the word of God himself, many ironic events occurred due to the twists of fate.   Sophocles masterfully weaves pieces of a legend together to create a dramatic tale of fate and irony called "Oedipus Rex". Mormon Sub-Culture

The Mormon can be understood by taking a critical review on their values institution norms and artic-facts [1].   According to the Mormon their value the importance of a family, the reverence of God as well as the appearance of the teaching as taught in the book of Mormons. To the Mormons all that seems important to them is their interconnectedness to God. The Mormons value the relationships they maintain with the outside world.   According to them, it is how well they relate with the outside world that will attract more converts to their belief. The norms of the Mormons are very different from that of the mainstream churches.   The Mormons dress and carry themselves around differently.   They have very high expectations of how the society should carry out their affairs. For instance the Mormons would not attend any other religious celebration apart from those strictly recommended for in their religion. According to the Mormons they have laws, which regulate their conduct and determine what is wrong and what is right.   In other words the culture of the Mormons significantly varies from that of other cultures.   According to the Mormons, material possessions and wealth is not very important but what matters is the relationship one has with God. The Mormons have some ideological settings as well as sociological settings that are different from those other cultures.   While the Mormons do not have strong attachment to material things, they have a single way of looking at things, which is different from other cultures.   They have some symbols, which they adore and hold dear to them. for instance, they have the symbol of the cross which they value for they see it as their link to their faith. The Mormons have their kind of music, which defines their belief in worship.   For instance, they do not advocate for the use of musical instruments for they hold that as a way of distracting the attention from worship.   They have their own legacy of commitment, which leads them to view service to God as very crucial. For instance, the Mormon culture calls for a special code of dress for the men, which is aimed at separating them from common cultures.   Their distinct behaviour and belief in the Book of Mormons is a clear attribution of their special sub-culture.   The Mormons do not ascribe to nationalism and they distance themselves from political affairs. According to Mormons the way one interacts with the surrounding world goes a long way in determining the kind and quality of life one is likely to lead. Mormons have a special way of treating members of other religious beliefs.   According to them, anyone can convert to Mormon despite their colour, sex or socio-economic status.  Ã‚   Mormon culture is therefore defined by their commitment to the religion, the distinct code of dressing, the distinct way of talking as well as the distinct manner of reaching out to others. Spirituality is given prominence in Mormonism while Mysticism is less emphasized[2].   Unlike other cultures, the Mormon culture is more spiritual oriented and this makes the life of a Mormon worshipper revolve around the temple, the home and the Mormon community[3].   According to the Mormons, there is nothing wrong with the way other people carry themselves differently but the question is, whether that conduct is in line with the preaching of the Book of Mormons. The Mormons hold the view that paganism is evil and there is no room for it.   Another interesting characteristic of the Mormon sub-culture is the place women are given in the religion. According to the Mormons, women should play a less important role in the running of the church.   Mormons is largely a male-dominated religion, which holds that man is superior to the woman. To the Mormons the woman’s place in the church is considered as that of offering support to enable the spread of their faith.   It therefore emerges that Mormons differ significantly from other mainstream churches in that they have not welcomed the emancipation of the woman.   The Mormons have succeeded in advancing their way of thinking and for centuries have stood up against pressure of influence and calls for the sub-culture to conform to conventional wisdom[4].   It therefore appears that the Mormons have been marginalized as a result of their commitment to adhere to their strict culture although this marginalization has taken the perspective of religious dimension. The Mormons have also been marginalized in terms of political representation as well as in the war against gender discrimination, partly because of their high advocacy for privacy and secrecy.   However, the Mormon sub-culture has some form of freedom of its own especially considering the fact that in the previous centuries it tended to advocate for polygamy, a kind of freedom unheard of in other mainstream religious cultures.   Their efforts to lead a distinct kind of life has earned them respect in some quarters although some critics view that as suppression of fundamental human rights. Therefore Mormon sub-culture is characterized by myth, values such as commitment to the faith of Mormon, ritualism especially in terms of the dressing code, emphasis on secrecy and privacy as well as strict call for every faithful to remain true to the faith upon conversion. What Makes a Good Friend

In my opinion a good friend is someone who is always around you. Another quality for a good friend is someone who lets you barrow money if you barrow them money. The last quality is someone who does favors for you if you do favors for them. The first quality to a good friend is someone who is always around you. Hanging out with each other. Another thing is texting them all the time. Also, playing video games. The last thing is going to the movies. The second quality is someone who gives you money if you give them money. Some examples are when I go to McDonalds or Subway and I don’t have money my friend gives me money and if he doesn’t have money I will pay for him. Also my friend always drives me around and I always give him money for gas. The last good quality for a friend is someone who does favors for you if you do favors for them. For example: if I give him money he gives me money, if I help him on homework he helps me on homework, if I buy him lunch he buys me lunch. A good friend is someone who is always around you. Someone who lets you barrow money if you barrow them money. Someone who does favors for you if you do favors for them. Those three qualities are the main three qualities that I am looking for in a friend.

Custom Van

Custom Vans, Inc. , specializes in converting standard vans into campers. Depending on the amount of work and customizing to be done, the customizing could cost less than $1,000 to more than $5,000. In less than four years, Tony Rizzo was able to expand his small operation in Gary, Indiana, to other major outlets in Chicago, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, and Detroit. Innovation was the major factor in Tony’s success in converting a small van shop into one of the largest and most profitable custom van operations in the Midwest.Tony seemed to have a special ability to design and develop unique features and devices that were always in high demand by van owners. An example was Shower-Rific, which was developed by Tony only six months after Custom Vans, Inc. , was started. These small showers were completely self-contained, and they could be placed in almost any type of van and in a number of different locations within a van. Shower-Rific was made of fiberglass and contained towel racks, built-in soap and shampoo holders, and a unique plastic door. Each Shower-Rific took 2 gallons of fiberglass and 3 hours of labor to manufacture. Most of the Shower-Rifics were manufactured in Gary in the same warehouse where Custom Vans, Inc. , was founded. The manufacturing plant in Gary could produce 300 Shower-Rifics in a month, but this capacity never seemed to be enough. Custom Van shops in all locations were complaining about not getting enough Shower Rifics, and because Minneapolis was farther away from Gary than the other locations, Tony was always inclined to ship Shower-Rifics to the other locations before Minneapolis. This infuriated the manager of Custom Vans at Minneapolis, and after many heated discussions, Tony decided to start another manufacturing plant for Shower-Rifics at Fort Wayne, Indiana. The manufacturing plant at Fort Wayne could produce 150 Shower-Rifics per month. The manufacturing plant at Fort Wayne was still not able to meet current demand for Shower-Ri fics, and Tony knew that the demand for his unique camper shower would grow rapidly in the next year. After consulting with his lawyer and banker, Tony concluded that he should open two new manufacturing plants as soon as possible. Each plant would have the same capacity as the Fort Wayne manufacturing plant. An initial investigation into possible manufacturing locations was made, and Tony decided that the two new plants should be located in Detroit, Michigan; Rockford, Illinois; or Madison, Wisconsin. Tony knew that selecting the best location for the two new manufacturing plants would be difficult. Transportation costs and demands for the various locations should be important considerations. The Chicago shop was managed by Bill Burch. This Custom Van shop was one of the first established by Tony, and it continued to outperform the other locations. The manufacturing plant at Gary was supplying 200 Shower-Rifics each month, although Bill knew that the demand for the showers in Chicago was 300 units. The transportation cost per unit from Gary was $10, and although the transportation cost from Fort Wayne was double that amount, Bill was always pleading with Tony to get an additional 50 units from the Fort Wayne manufacturer. The two additional manufacturing plants would certainly be able to supply Bill with the additional 100 showers he needed. The transportation costs would, of course, vary, depending on which two locations Tony picked. The transportation cost per shower would be $30 from Detroit, $5 from Rockford, and $10 from Madison. Wilma Jackson, manager of the Custom Van shop in Milwaukee, was the most upset about not getting an adequate supply of showers. She had a demand for 100 units, and at the present time, she was only getting half of this demand from the Fort Wayne manufacturing plant. She could not understand why Tony didn’t ship her all 100 units from Gary. The transportation cost per unit from Gary was only $20, while the transportation cost from Fort Wayne was $30. Wilma was hoping that Tony would select Madison for one of the manufacturing locations. She would be able to get all of the showers needed, and the transportation cost per unit would only be $5. If not Madison, a new plant in Rockford would be able to supply her total needs, but the transportation cost per unit would be twice as much as it would be from Madison. Because the transportation cost per unit from Detroit would be $40, Wilma speculated that even if Detroit became one of the new plants, she would not be getting any units from Detroit. Custom Vans, Inc. , of Minneapolis was managed by Tom Poanski. He was getting 100 showers from the Gary plant. Demand was 150 units.Tom faced the highest transportation costs of all locations. The transportation cost from Gary was $40 per unit. It would cost $10 more if showers were sent from the Fort Wayne location. Tom was hoping that Detroit would not be one of the new plants, as the transportation cost would be $60 per unit. Rockford and Madison would have a cost of $30 and $25, respectively, to ship one shower to Minneapolis. The Detroit shop's position was similar to Milwaukee’s—only getting half of the demand each month. The 100 units that Detroit did receive came directly from the Fort Wayne plant. The transportation cost was only $15 per unit from Fort Wayne, whereas it was $25 from Gary. Dick Lopez, manager of Custom Vans, Inc. , of Detroit, placed the probability of having one of the new plants in Detroit fairly high. The factory would be located across town, and the transportation cost would be only $5 per unit. He could get 150 showers from the new plant in Detroit and the other 50 showers from Fort Wayne. Even if Detroit was not selected, the other two locations were not intolerable. Rockford had a transportation cost per unit of $35, and Madison had a transportation cost of $40.Tony pondered the dilemma of locating the two new plants for several weeks before deciding t o call a meeting of all the managers of the van shops. The decision was complicated, but the objective was clear—to minimize total costs. The meeting was held in Gary, and everyone was present except Wilma. Tony: Thank you for coming. As you know, I have decided to open up two new plants at Rockford, Madison, or Detroit. The two locations, of course, will change our shipping practices, and I sincerely hope that they will supply you with the Shower-Rifics that you have been wanting.I know you could have sold more units, and I want you to know that I am sorry for this situation. Dick: Tony, I have given this situation a lot of consideration, and I feel strongly that at least one of the new plants should be located in Detroit. As you know, I am now only getting half of the showers that I need. My brother, Leon, is very interested in running the plant, and I know he would do a good job. Tom: Dick, I am sure that Leon could do a good job, and I know how difficult it has been since the recent layoffs by the auto industry.Nevertheless, we should be considering total costs and not personalities. I believe that the new plants should be located in Madison and Rockford. I am farther away from the other plants than any other shop, and these locations would significantly reduce transportation costs. Dick: That may be true, but there are other factors. Detroit has one of the largest suppliers of fiberglass, and I have checked prices. A new plant in Detroit would be able to purchase fiberglass for $2 per gallon less than any of the other existing or proposed plants. Tom: At Madison, we have an excellent labor force. This is due primarily to the large number of students attending the University of Madison. These students are hard workers, and they will work for $1 less per hour than the other locations that we are considering. Bill: Calm down, you two. It is obvious that we will not be able to satisfy everyone in locating the new plants. Therefore, I would like to sugge st that we vote on the two best locations. Tony: I don’t think that voting would be a good idea. Wilma was not able to attend, and we should be looking at all of these factors together in some type of logical fashion.

Letter to self Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Letter to self - Essay Example Your journey in becoming a highly skilled communicator was filled with challenges, being an international student and not a native English speaker. You had to struggle in learning the complicated rules of the English language which so confused you at that time! Not to mention that you were very young and was at the phase of adjusting to a new culture in America, coming from your home country, Bahrain. However, due to your zest for learning and your persistence in mastering the English language, you succeeded in communicating effectively in your second language. You learned that you had to suit your style to your audience. It was easy for you to write informally when your audience were your friends and people who did not mind a more laid-back approach. However, when it came to writing formal essays, research papers and business correspondences, you found it more difficult to adjust your tone to a more serious audience. You’ve always been a great communicator, judging from your work in high school when there was no issue about using a second language. In your native tongue, you expressed yourself very well in both verbal and non-verbal ways. Your essays and letters were very clear and reflected your personality. Add to your strengths, your capacity to understand instructions well and deliver action quickly and accurately. In your first semester in College, learning English was no easy feat! You manifested weakness in exams and tests and were frustrated in performing poorly in such tasks. However, once you persevered in learning the language well, you were able to achieve the goals you set for yourself as a college student eager to prove your inherent skills and abilities. Living at a time when language evolves rapidly, it is easy to give in to the temptation to adopt colloquial and bastardized words in one’s writing. The proliferation of â€Å"text language† or short-cut spellings of words in text messages such as IKR (I know, right!_, BRB (b e right back) or even the oft-used LOL (laugh out loud) may confuse people with its use in writing. It is still not acceptable to use such in more formal writing work. Remember not to include them in your repertoire of words to use in your future business correspondences or else you might not be taken seriously. Learning about theories in your college years clarify much of what you will encounter in actual practice. That is why you studied about the works of prolific writers and authors. Reading articles and books helped a lot in building your vocabulary and developing our own style. Do keep reading books, magazines, newspapers and even online articles to keep you up-to-date and keep learning how people use the English language to convey their messages. You have also learned about the ethics of using other people’s ideas in your work. Never plagiarize. Give credit where credit is due. How would you feel if someone else snatched your awesome work or bits of it and never mentio ned that it was you who came up with such a brilliant idea? Reading other people’s works should not stop you from developing your own original ideas. Let it enhance your own imagination to create something related but different. Cultivate your creativity share your novel ideas with others. In your own practice as a business person, work on innovating things and come up with new strategies to promote your business. Use various communication avenues to disseminate it. As of this time, the internet is a great medium in sharing one’

American Creation Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

American Creation - Essay Example Lincoln had fought the elections with the claim that slavery would not be spread into any new state and would remain within the states where it existed. These seven states then rooted for succession, even before Lincoln took office. This move was rejected by the US administration and seen as a rebellion. The American Civil War was one of the deadliest wars in history. It resulted in the deaths of hundred thousands of soldiers: approximately 620000 and civilians (Donald 2001). This essay will discuss if civil war was inevitable and what were the major causes the forced the seven states into rebelling against the newly formed government. Timing and space were seen as a vital aspect of gaining freedom from the British forces (Ellis). Not only did this freedom come during a time when human rights were better understood, there was no choice left but for the American nation to seek independence. Also, the geography of America was such that its vastness compelled it to be wrested out of the hands of the occupying forces. In the same way, the leaders understood this concept of time and space, allowing them to be victorious in the civil war. The compromises of 1850 had been created to resolve any territorial or slavery problems that arose in the newly created state (Rhodes 1896). These laws were created for the slave states of the South and the free states of the North. The self-righteous but truly commercial motives of the North were often masked as a crusade (Stammp). These compromises were made to ensure that no state felt itself ousted from the system, allowing them to play an integral and vital role in giving stability to the burgeoning country. These compromises included various forms initiated by the government. For instance, Texas was a necessary state to include in the country. When Mexico took over the state of Texas, the only solution for America was to buy the heavily indebted state with which a large portion of the land was moved under the control of America's federal government. Another one these compromises included the decision made on the territories of New Mexico and Utah. The provisions provided by th e compromise organized the land given to both states. It also gave them the freedom of choosing to permit or prohibit slavery depending on the decision of the masses. This however was a flaw that was later corrected by the Wilmot Proviso which forbade slavery in any territory that was acquired from Mexico (Holt 1978). Thus, while the land and borders had been marked. The problems existing within the states were not recognized in the compromise. California was accepted as a free state within the decisions of this compromise. Another aspect of these compromises was the abolition of slave trade in the District of Columbia. Thus it was made to suit the needs of those who had possession of slaves. It was seen as a huge step because it stopped the sale of slaves in the region but did not work to dig out the root of problem: the possession of slaves. One of the most important aspects of the compromises made in 1850 was the installation of the Fugitive Slave Act. This Act did not specify an y state: free or slave. Every territory was expected to take any slave who had run away back to the owner. Thus, ordinary citizens could be to participate in the custody, capture and transportation of the escaped slave back to

Discuss the problem of compounding Type I error and explain how the Essay

Discuss the problem of compounding Type I error and explain how the ANOVA addresses this problem - Essay Example In most cases, the effects of multiple tests are ignored and their interaction in the two-way ANOVA. According to Huck (2014), chapter eleven, some of the recommended solutions to compounding the Type 1 error is through ignoring them or by the use of ANOVA. The ANOVA works by comparing the variance within each sample population and the variance between different samples. The variance between and within the samples are computed by getting the sum of the squares then using different formulas to obtain the final result. First, compute the variance between the samples then compute the variance within the samples. Next, computation of the ratio that exists between the variance obtained from between and within to obtain the F ratio. If the null hypothesis is true it implies that the variance between the samples should be equal to zero. Is the converse is the case, the F ratio is larger and the bigger the value gets, the more the chances of rejecting the null hypothesis. Another solution is through the Bonferroni adjustment in which case the alpha is divided by the number of tests. This helps in minimizing on the effects of factorial issue on the final result (Ware & Brewer,

Current issues in dissability studies activity 6 Essay

Current issues in dissability studies activity 6 - Essay Example uests for help has often result in increased parental stress due to the fact that their needs and their children’s needs may not always be in agreement with professionals about what constitutes actions that are helpful (Prezant, & Marshak 2006). A number of disability-related literature proposed that problems with the provision or absence of help are often reported by respondents in these categories. For example, a study of 120 parents conducted by Prezant, & Marshak (2006) that narrated the parents’ actual experiences over the kind of help that they got from their collaboration with professionals suggest that not all the help they got from these professionals are perceived as truly appropriate. Parents reported that although some are perceived as helpful collaboration, still they desire a relationship with professionals that focus on respect, collaboration, communication, and information-sharing. Relate any experiences that you may have had in working with people/families from a different cultural background from your own. What did these experiences teach you, or if you have had no such experiences yet, what are your thoughts on working with families from diverse cultural backgrounds? Post your thoughts on FLO. There are quite a number of experiences that I can relate to based on the readings. Teaching children with autism in Saudi Arabia has been quite an experience such that the cultural background and approaches differ from that of my strategies and their expectations. It has been quite a challenge at first since in order to help the children, I also have to make the parents understand why such action or strategy is important because sometimes, it contradicts with what they believe. The challenge mainly was that sometimes, the consistency of the strategies applied for children with autism ends in school as the parents have different views and approaches very unique to their culture. But despite of this, I find parents in Saudi Arabia cooperative in
